The meeting will be at the Legal Aid and Defender Building, 613 Abbott St., Detroit 48226. Lunch will be served at 12:00 noon and the meeting will begin at 12:30.

I.   Welcome; introductions. (Denise Page Hood) Althea Hayward from the Legal Services Corporation will be introduced and welcomed.

II.   Discussion Items

      A.   Crossroads implementation and Planning Body workplan

This is a continuation of the discussion from the April meeting about the status of the Access To Justice related initiatives arising from the Judicial Crossroads report and the role of the Planning Body in implementing the Crossroads recommendations. The agenda will also include a more detailed discussion of three of these initiatives---indigent criminal defense, the Solutions on Self Help Task Force, and Language Access.

      B.   Developments in Indigent Criminal Defense (Dawn Van Hoek and Bridget McCormack)

An update on the state of indigent defense services in the state, including a discussion of ongoing litigation, legislative initiatives, future plans, and organizational work.

A discussion of the work of the Task Force, including plans for the statewide pro se website; the report and recommendations that John Graecen prepared for the Task Force; and the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Turner v. Rogers.

A discussion of the proposed ABA Language Access Standards, the ongoing work of the SCAO Workgroup on this topic, and the recent DOJ investigation of Michigan practices in this area.

Presenters are invited to give written or brief oral reports. We appreciate written reports that can be distributed before the meeting.
